A free or reduced-cost Home Energy Assessment helps you understand how your home can work more efficiently to conserve energy and save money while still providing the comfort you need. Once the assessment is complete, a contractor will provide a detailed plan outlining ways to improve your home’s environmental impact and reduce the amount of energy you use.
This subsidized audit is available through a NYSERDA-ENERGY STAR partnership. Depending on your income, NYSERDA will cover all or most of the cost (a $250 value). Speak to a contractor for details.

NYSEG seeks to provide Smart Solutions customers with high quality, local contractors. All NYSEG Smart Solutions qualified contractors are certified through the Building Performance Institute (BPI) and have been evaluated by NYSEG on customer service practices, prior experience, safety records and maintenance of minimum certifications. NYSEG Home Solutions qualified home assessment contractors will assess your energy efficiency needs free of charge. This assessment will identify opportunities to make your home more comfortable, lower your energy bills and reduce your environmental impact.
After the assessment, a qualified contractor will provide you with a detailed report containing recommended home energy improvements you can make. Common energy efficiency improvements include:
- installing additional attic insulation
- sealing air duct leaks
- identifying more efficient heating systems
The contractor will help you prioritize the recommendations, discuss options for applicable rebates and loans and can do the work for any projects you may choose to undertake. For example, you may take advantage of low-interest financing with an On-Bill Recovery Loan or Smart Energy Loan offered through New York State Energy and Research Authority. Speak to your contractor for additional details regarding loan availability.
